The Beinecke Rare Book Library at Yale University was designed in 1963 by Modernist architect Gordon Bunshaft of SOM. For the building's sunken courtyard, Bunshaft commissioned sculptor Isamu Noguchi to create a three-piece "landscape" containing a circle, a pyramid, and a corner-balancing cube — which references the sun, the earth, and chance.
