Les Quatre Cents Coups

The 400 Blows (French: Les Quatre Cents Coups) is a 1959 French New Wave drama film, shot in DyaliScope and the debut by director François Truffaut; it stars Jean-Pierre Léaud, Albert Rémy, and Claire Maurier.

The English title is a literal translation of the French but misses its meaning, as the French title refers to the idiom "faire les quatre cents coups", which means "to raise hell". On the first prints in the United States, subtitler and dubber Noelle Gillmor gave the film the title Wild Oats, but the distributor did not like that and reverted it to The 400 Blows. Before seeing it, some people thought the film covered the topic of corporal punishment.[6]~~ Wiki

Sir Thomas More was born in London, England on this day in 1478.
"And when the devil hath seen that they have set so little by him, after certain essays, made in such times as he thought most fitting, he hath given that temptation quite over. And this he doth not only because the proud spirit cannot endure to be mocked, but also lest, with much tempting the man to the sin to which he could not in conclusion bring him, he should much increase his merit."
—from "Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation" (1553)
Thomas More is perhaps most familiar to us from his courageous struggle with Henry VIII, unforgettably portrayed in Robert Bolt’s classic, A Man for All Seasons. But that final struggle, which ended in his execution for treason, was only the crowning act in a life that he had devoted to God long before. In the first selection in decades made for the general reader from his collected works, this volume traces More’s journey of moral conviction in his own words and writings. Drawing on a variety of More’s late writings–the extraordinary “Tower Works,” written in prison, his poignant last letters to his daughter Margaret, and his poems, private prayers and devotional works–this collection will provide even readers lacking a background in Renaissance humanism or history with a rich introduction to a startlingly modern man of spiritual principle. Also included is the famous “Life of Sir Thomas More,” written by his son-in-law, William Roper. In the annals of spirituality certain books stand out both for their historical importance and for their continued relevance. The Vintage Spiritual Classics series offers the greatest of these works in authoritative new editions, with specially commissioned essays by noted contemporary commentators. Filled with eloquence and fresh insight, encouragement and solace, Vintage Spiritual Classics are incomparable resources for all readers who seek a more substantive understanding of mankind’s relation to the divine.

Apocalypse Now (1979), directed by Francis Ford Coppola, is widely regarded as one of the greatest war films ever made. Set during the Vietnam War, it is loosely based on Joseph Conrad’s novella *Heart of Darkness* and chronicles Captain Willard’s (Martin Sheen) journey up the Nung River to assassinate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a rogue officer who has established himself as a god-like figure among a local tribe.

The production of *Apocalypse Now* was notoriously difficult and plagued by problems, which have become as legendary as the film itself. The movie was filmed in the Philippines, and production faced a series of catastrophic delays due to bad weather, including a typhoon that destroyed many of the sets. In addition, the lead actor, Martin Sheen, suffered a heart attack during filming, which added further stress to an already chaotic shoot.

Marlon Brando’s involvement in the film was also a source of controversy. Brando arrived on set overweight and unprepared, forcing Coppola to rewrite large portions of the script and shoot the actor in shadows to obscure his appearance. Despite these challenges, Brando’s portrayal of Kurtz remains one of the film’s most memorable performances, adding to the aura of mystery and madness surrounding his character.

The film is noted for its surreal atmosphere, blending nightmarish war imagery with philosophical reflections on the nature of conflict, power, and morality. One of the most iconic sequences is the helicopter assault on a Vietnamese village, set to Richard Wagner’s "Ride of the Valkyries." This scene exemplifies the film’s juxtaposition of the beauty and horror of war.

Coppola famously declared, “This film is not about Vietnam, it **is** Vietnam,” reflecting the chaos and moral ambiguity of the war itself. The film’s troubled production mirrored the madness it sought to portray, with Coppola even suffering a nervous breakdown during filming due to the pressures of the project.

*Apocalypse Now* won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning two for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. Its impact on cinema is profound, and its themes of war, insanity, and the human condition continue to resonate with audiences today.

Did you know that one of the greatest writers in the English literature was Polish? Today is the 166th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Conrad, or rather Józef Teodor Korzeniowski. When he was less than 17 years old, Conrad went to France, where he took a job as a sailor. It was while working on British ships that Joseph Conrad learned the English language. His experiences in Southeast Asia ("Lord Jim") and Africa ("Heart of Darkness") were central to his books, in which he steadfastly criticized the colonial oppression of the time. You can read more about his life here: https://culture.pl/en/article/joseph-conrads-forgotten-relationship-with-political-activism

Based on Conrad's book "Heart of Darkness", Francis Coppola directed the movie "Apocalypse Now" with Marlon Brando in the main role.

One day, Leo Tolstoy was standing on the platform of the Tula station when a courier train made a brief stop. A gentleman quickly exited a first-class carriage and dashed toward the buffet. Moments later, a lady emerged from the carriage and called after him, “George! George!” But George, focused on the buffet, didn’t hear her.

The lady, in a hurry, noticed Tolstoy nearby, mistaking him for an ordinary old man. She approached him and said, “Old man, could you please fetch that gentleman over there? I’ll give you a penny.”

Tolstoy, amused, complied and brought George back to the lady, who handed him the promised penny. As this unfolded, the onlookers on the platform began to whisper excitedly, “Look, it’s Tolstoy!” The lady, now intrigued, asked, “Where? Where?” When they pointed to the old man who had retrieved George, she was mortified. Rushing over, she exclaimed, “Count Tolstoy, please forgive me! I’m so embarrassed...” She then asked for the penny back.

Tolstoy, with a hearty laugh, replied, “No, I won’t give up this penny... It may be the only penny I’ve ever honestly earned.” As the third bell rang, signaling the train's departure, the flustered lady quickly retreated to her carriage.

This anecdote, from Ivan Nazhivin’s biography “Tolstoy’s Soul,”captures Tolstoy’s humility and humor, even in the face of mistaken identity.

Let me just come right out and say it: I love Bernie Sanders.

I love his authenticity. I love his chutzpah. I love Bernie because he’s a true populist — a word that has gotten a terrible rap since Trump, but should be redeemed. It means for the people and against the powerful. Trump pretends to be a populist, but he’s always wanted to be one of the powerful and has forever been in their pockets. Bernie is a true populist.

I love Bernie because he has more guts than most politicians I know. Hell, he has more guts than just about anyone I know.

Today is his birthday, and I want to wish him well.

Keep fighting, Bernie. I'll be right alongside you, friend.

(Robert B. Reich)

4.The Work of Nations(Alfred A. Knopf,1991)《
