Most of the trouble in the world is caused by people wanting to be important.

~ T.S Eliot

Andrei Tarkovsky has directed seven feature films that have established him as one of the most important directors in the history of cinema. His legacy is such that he instituted his own language and aesthetics.

To say that The Sacrifice sums up his work, his cinematography and his philosophy is not simply motivated by the fact that it's his last film.

The Sacrifice is a masterpiece that explores profound themes of existentialism, spirituality and the human condition. The film unfolds slowly, inviting viewers into the inner world of its protagonist, Alexander, brilliantly portrayed by Erland Josephson. Set against a backdrop of impending doom and global catastrophe, it revolves around the essence of faith, sacrifice, and the search for meaning in a world on the brink of destruction.

Tarkovsky's unmistakable long takes and breathtaking cinematography immerse the viewer in beautiful landscapes, often serving as visual metaphors for the characters' inner conflicts.

While some might find its deliberate pace and abstract storytelling demanding, those willing to engage deeply will discover a profoundly moving and thought-provoking cinematic experience that encourages us to reflect about the complexities of life, love, and the metaphysical.

"The Sacrifice" stands as a testament to Tarkovsky's mastery of cinema, leaving an indelible mark on those who delve into its depths.

The Sacrifice

,。。。。。。。。。

the Themes in "Waiting for Godot"

Samuel Beckett's iconic play, "Waiting for Godot", is a masterpiece of absurdist theatre that delves into the human condition, revealing the absurdity, uncertainty, and despair that accompany our existence. Here are the major themes:

1. The Absurdity of Life

The play highlights the absurdity of human existence, where characters wait endlessly for something that may never arrive, mirroring the futility of human endeavors.

2. Uncertainty and Doubt

Godot's absence and the characters' uncertainty about his arrival embody the existential doubt that pervades human life, leaving us questioning the meaning and purpose of our existence.

3. The Search for Meaning

Vladimir and Estragon's wait for Godot serves as a metaphor for humanity's search for meaning, purpose, and connection in a seemingly indifferent world.

4. The Futility of Human Endeavor

The play critiques the futility of human actions, as the characters' attempts to pass time, find meaning, and connect with each other ultimately lead to nothing.

5. Alienation and Isolation

The characters' inability to truly connect with each other, despite their physical proximity, highlights the alienation and isolation that can accompany human existence.

6. Time and Its Relativity

The play's non-linear structure and the characters' distorted sense of time illustrate the relativity of time and its subjective nature.

7. The Cyclical Nature of Existence

The repetitive structure of the play, with Vladimir and Estragon's wait for Godot repeating itself, suggests the cyclical nature of existence, where events and experiences recur without progress or resolution.

8. The Illusion of Hope

Godot's promised arrival serves as an illusion of hope, perpetuating the characters' wait and mirroring humanity's tendency to cling to hope despite the uncertainty of its fulfillment.

What did it matter where you lay once you were dead ? In a dirty sump or in a marble tower on top of a high hill ? You were dead ,you were sleeping the big dead ,you were not bothered by things like that. Oil and water were the same as wind and air to you. You just slept the big sleep, not caring about the nastiness of how you died or where you fell.

****

4 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord.
2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering:
5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
6 And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9 And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.
11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand;
12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth.
13 And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me.
15 And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
16 And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch.
18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.
19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
21 And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.
23 And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.
24 If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.

Previous創世紀:Chapter 4Next

3有一天,加音把田地的出產作祭品獻給天主;
23拉默客對自己的妻子說:「阿達和漆拉傾聽我的聲音,拉默客的妻子,靜聆我的言語:因我受傷,殺了一成年;因我受損,殺了一青年;

Joni Mitchell - Shadows and Light

Every picture has it's shadows
And it has some source of light
Blindness, blindness and sight
The perils of benefactors
The blessings of parasites
Blindness, blindness and sight
Threatened by all things
Devil of cruelty
Drawn to all things
Devil of delight
Mythical devil of the ever-present laws
Governing blindness, blindness and sight
Suntans in reservation dining rooms
Pale miners in their lantern rays
Night, night and day
Hostage smiles on presidents
Freedom scribbled in the subway
It's like night, night and day
Threatened by all things
God of cruelty
Drawn to all things
God of delight
Mythical God of the everlasting* laws
Governing day, day and night
Critics of all expression
Judges in black and white
Saying it's wrong, saying it's right
Compelled by prescribed standards
Or some ideals we fight
For wrong, wrong and right
Threatened by all things
Man of cruelty, mark of Cain**
Drawn to all things
Man of delight, born again, born again
Man of the laws, the ever broken laws
Governing wrong, wrong and right
Governing wrong, wrong and right
Wrong and right

*EVER-PRESENT?

For wrong, wrong and right
Threatened by all things
Man of cruelty, mark of Cain**

Greed has poisoned men's souls,

has barricaded the world with hate,

has goose-stepped us into misery

and bloodshed.

We have developed speed,

but we have shut ourselves in.

Machinery that gives abundance

has left us in want.

Our knowledge has made us cynical;

our cleverness, hard and unkind.

We think too much and feel too little.

More than machinery,

we need humanity.

More than cleverness,

we need kindness and gentleness.

Without these qualities,

life will be violent and all will be lost.

~ Charlie Chaplin

This is the final week of Calder: Un effet du japonais at Azabudai Hills Gallery, Tokyo. As described in The Japan Times, the exhibition leaves visitors with “a striking perspective on Calder’s art, understanding how his legacy, though firmly rooted in American modernism, truly echoes Japan. Calder himself may never have traveled to Tokyo, but scions of his lineage did—decisively and emphatically. Both in the flesh (his grandson Rower) and in the form of his artistic creations, which are on display here and at 18 museums across Japan.” Calder: Un effet du japonais closes on Friday, 6 September.

“Cruel men believe in a cruel God, and use their belief to excuse their cruelty. Only kindly men believe in a kindly God, and they would be kindly in any case. Men tend to have the beliefs that suit their passions.”

Image: The Deluge frontispiece to Doré's illustrated edition of the Holy Bible, 1886. Based on the story of Noah's Ark, the plate portrays humans and a tiger doomed by the flood futilely attempting to save their children and cubs from God's wrath and cruelty.

The global flood is a catastrophic, mythical event found in the book of Genesis. The narrative in the scripture tells the story of a great flooding of the entire surface of world, in which every last human and animal died, except for the ones saved on the Ark, a vessel constructed at God's command by Noah and his sons. The flood, according to the Bible, was justified by this deity since every person in the whole world - except eight people the deity chose - were wicked and warranted death. The precise nature of this “wickedness” is left unclear so believers have been for centuries free to develop their own imaginative and judgmental ideas. This near total extinction, or as some have called “execution“ of Earth's biosphere includes very young children, infants (even the unborn), and almost all the world's animals, all put to death, except for the few animals and Noah's immediate family abroad the Ark, all on account of this deity's displeasure, rage, and cruelty.

“And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl and of cattle and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: all in whose nostrils was the breath of life, all that was on the dry land, died.

And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man and cattle, and the creeping things and the fowl of the heaven, and they were destroyed from the earth.

And Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.”

— Genesis 7:21-73

On this day in 1931, a teenage girl made history in a way that no one saw coming. Jackie Mitchell, the 17-year-old pitcher for the Chattanooga Lookouts, took the mound and did the unthinkable: she struck out baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in an exhibition game. This feat, which sounds like something out of a Hollywood movie, is very real and showcases the incredible talent Mitchell possessed.

From a young age, Mitchell's potential was evident. Living next door to future Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Dazzy Vance, she learned to pitch using his special "drop ball" technique. Her skills quickly advanced, and by 17, she was playing for a women's team, attending a baseball school in Atlanta, and catching the eye of the Chattanooga Lookouts. In 1931, she signed one of the first professional baseball contracts given to a woman.

Mitchell's moment of fame came swiftly that season, but her triumph was short-lived. Despite her impressive performance against Ruth and Gehrig, the baseball commissioner soon voided her contract, deeming the sport "too strenuous" for women. Undeterred, Mitchell continued to play professionally with traveling teams until her retirement in 1937.

Jackie Mitchell's story is a testament to breaking barriers and challenging norms. Her legacy reminds us that talent knows no gender, even if the world isn't always ready to accept it.

(Hanching Chung)

The Book of Imaginary Being的作品中,有一則故事說鳥王Simurge在中國留了一片羽毛。

(I confess, we faked the data)。 (I had no idea what I was doing when I wrote Search.

Published in 2011, Jocelyn Sharlet's ‘Patronage and Poetry in the Islamic World’ reveals how panegyric poetry in medieval Arabic and Persian cultures served not only as a reflection of society but also as a dynamic instrument for social ascension, opening pathways to prestige and power within the complex patronage systems.

Book Summary:

“Panegyric poetry, in both Arabic and Persian, was one of the most important genres of literature in the medieval Middle East and Central Asia. Jocelyn Sharlet argues that panegyric poetry is important not only because it provides a commentary on society and culture in the medieval Middle East, but also because panegyric writing was one of the key means for individuals to gain social mobility and standing during this period.

This is particularly so within the context of patronage, a central feature of social order during these times. Sharlet places the medieval Arabic and Persian panegyric firmly within its cultural context, and identifies it as a crucial way of gaining entry to and movement within this patronage network. This is an important contribution to the fields of pre-modern Middle Eastern and Central Asian literature and culture.”

"Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics." by Richard H. Thaler

"The core premise of economic theory is that people choose by optimizing."

Here are 7 lessons from Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics by Richard H. Thaler

1. Understanding Human Behavior: Richard H. Thaler likely emphasizes the importance of understanding human behavior from a realistic perspective rather than relying solely on traditional economic models.

The book may explore how individuals often deviate from rational decision-making and the implications of these deviations for economic theory.

2. The Role of Psychology in Economics: Misbehaving probably highlights the role of psychology in shaping economic decision-making.

Thaler may discuss how psychological factors such as biases, emotions, and heuristics influence economic behavior and challenge traditional economic assumptions.

3. Nudge Theory and Choice Architecture: The book likely introduces the concept of nudge theory, which involves designing choices in ways that influence behavior without restricting freedom of choice.

Thaler may discuss how choice architecture can be used to encourage better decision-making, such as through default options and framing effects.

4. Bounded Rationality: Misbehaving probably explores the concept of bounded rationality, which suggests that individuals make decisions based on limited information and cognitive resources.

Thaler may discuss how understanding the limitations of human cognition can lead to more accurate economic predictions and policy interventions.

5. Overcoming Market Anomalies: The book may discuss various market anomalies and puzzles that challenge traditional economic theory, such as the endowment effect, loss aversion, and the winner's curse.

Thaler may explore how behavioral economics offers insights into these phenomena and proposes alternative explanations.

6. Applying Behavioral Insights to Policy: Misbehaving likely discusses the application of behavioral insights to public policy and decision-making.

Thaler may provide examples of how governments and organizations have used behavioral economics to design more effective policies, such as encouraging saving for retirement and promoting healthier lifestyles.

7. The Evolution of Behavioral Economics: Lastly, the book may trace the evolution of behavioral economics as a field of study and its growing influence on economics, psychology, and public policy.

Thaler may discuss key milestones, debates, and future directions for the field.
