1、

Published in 2011, Jocelyn Sharlet's ‘Patronage and Poetry in the Islamic World’ reveals how panegyric poetry in medieval Arabic and Persian cultures served not only as a reflection of society but also as a dynamic instrument for social ascension, opening pathways to prestige and power within the complex patronage systems.

Book Summary:

“Panegyric poetry, in both Arabic and Persian, was one of the most important genres of literature in the medieval Middle East and Central Asia. Jocelyn Sharlet argues that panegyric poetry is important not only because it provides a commentary on society and culture in the medieval Middle East, but also because panegyric writing was one of the key means for individuals to gain social mobility and standing during this period.

This is particularly so within the context of patronage, a central feature of social order during these times. Sharlet places the medieval Arabic and Persian panegyric firmly within its cultural context, and identifies it as a crucial way of gaining entry to and movement within this patronage network. This is an important contribution to the fields of pre-modern Middle Eastern and Central Asian literature and culture.”

"Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics." by Richard H. Thaler

"The core premise of economic theory is that people choose by optimizing."

Here are 7 lessons from Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics by Richard H. Thaler

1. Understanding Human Behavior: Richard H. Thaler likely emphasizes the importance of understanding human behavior from a realistic perspective rather than relying solely on traditional economic models.

The book may explore how individuals often deviate from rational decision-making and the implications of these deviations for economic theory.

2. The Role of Psychology in Economics: Misbehaving probably highlights the role of psychology in shaping economic decision-making.

Thaler may discuss how psychological factors such as biases, emotions, and heuristics influence economic behavior and challenge traditional economic assumptions.

3. Nudge Theory and Choice Architecture: The book likely introduces the concept of nudge theory, which involves designing choices in ways that influence behavior without restricting freedom of choice.

Thaler may discuss how choice architecture can be used to encourage better decision-making, such as through default options and framing effects.

4. Bounded Rationality: Misbehaving probably explores the concept of bounded rationality, which suggests that individuals make decisions based on limited information and cognitive resources.

Thaler may discuss how understanding the limitations of human cognition can lead to more accurate economic predictions and policy interventions.

5. Overcoming Market Anomalies: The book may discuss various market anomalies and puzzles that challenge traditional economic theory, such as the endowment effect, loss aversion, and the winner's curse.

Thaler may explore how behavioral economics offers insights into these phenomena and proposes alternative explanations.

6. Applying Behavioral Insights to Policy: Misbehaving likely discusses the application of behavioral insights to public policy and decision-making.

Thaler may provide examples of how governments and organizations have used behavioral economics to design more effective policies, such as encouraging saving for retirement and promoting healthier lifestyles.

7. The Evolution of Behavioral Economics: Lastly, the book may trace the evolution of behavioral economics as a field of study and its growing influence on economics, psychology, and public policy.

Thaler may discuss key milestones, debates, and future directions for the field.
