「再忙也要讀英文,

再忙也要讀英文小說。」

這話,可是一位你鐵定出乎意料之外的大咖,告訴我的喔!

他是張忠謀先生,完全不需要名片也不需要任何虛名的人了。

他在一場針對台大EMBA的畢業典禮上給畢業生的忠告。我在場,聽得很仔細,只可惜,不是經常能做到的。

他說他每天都會讀一些英文小說。

這是事實,很多訪談裡他都說過類似的話。

這也是一種成功者的自律,把閱讀當習慣,日積月累,學識淵博。


我花了二十幾天,每天再忙,也讀幾頁英文小說,我這次讀完的是,小說家村上春樹亦喜歡的美國「硬派偵探小說家」,雷蒙•錢德勒(Raymond Chandler)的《The Big Sleep》(大眠),文采粲然,故事曲折,雖是偵探推理,卻文學筆法處處,人性解剖深邃,不少段落我都很願意背下來,難怪村上春樹會喜歡他。


看看這段結尾多好:What did it matter where you lay once you were dead ? In a dirty sump or in a marble tower on top of a high hill ? You were dead ,you were sleeping the big dead ,you were not bothered by things like that. Oil and water were the same as wind and air to you. You just slept the big sleep,not caring about the nastiness of how you died or where you fell.


(我來試著翻譯:死都死了,你還計較躺在哪裡嗎?躺在污水裡,躺在山上的大理石塔裡?對已經大眠的你,實在無須再為這煩惱了!油和水如同風與氣對你沒有什麼不同,你已經大眠了,怎會在乎你怎麼死的,又為何葬身此處呢!)


一個受託找尋失蹤人口的私家偵探,最終在一連串謀殺的案件中,抽絲剝繭,看到人性的某種脆弱與糾結,而死亡,亦即大眠(Big Sleep),是終結這一切虛華矯飾最好的答案。頗有《紅樓夢》裡,了凡歌的味道。


一天忙碌,一天吵雜,回家關門讀書,最樂。

15上主對他說:「決不這樣,凡殺加音的人,一定要受七倍的罰。」上主遂給加音一個記號,以免遇見他的人擊殺他。
16加音就離開上主的面,住在伊甸東方的諾得地方。
17加音認識了自己的妻子,她懷了孕,生了哈諾客。加音建築了一座城,即以他兒子的名字,給這城起名叫「哈諾客」。
18哈諾客生了依辣得;依辣得生了默胡雅耳;默胡雅耳生了默突沙耳;默突沙耳生了拉默客。
19拉默客娶了兩個妻子:一個名叫阿達,一個名叫漆拉。
20阿達生了雅巴耳,他是住在帳幕內畜牧者的始祖。
21他的弟弟名叫猶巴耳,他是所有彈琴吹簫者的始祖。
22同時漆拉也生了突巴耳加音,他是製造各種銅鐵器具的匠人。突巴耳加音有個姊妹名叫納阿瑪。
23拉默客對自己的妻子說:「阿達和漆拉傾聽我的聲音,拉默客的妻子,靜聆我的言語:因我受傷,殺了一成年;因我受損,殺了一青年;
24殺加音的受罰是七倍,殺拉默客的是七十七倍。」

The global flood is a catastrophic, mythical event found in the book of Genesis. The narrative in the scripture tells the story of a great flooding of the entire surface of world, in which every last human and animal died, except for the ones saved on the Ark, a vessel constructed at God's command by Noah and his sons. The flood, according to the Bible, was justified by this deity since every person in the whole world - except eight people the deity chose - were wicked and warranted death. The precise nature of this “wickedness” is left unclear so believers have been for centuries free to develop their own imaginative and judgmental ideas. This near total extinction, or as some have called “execution“ of Earth's biosphere includes very young children, infants (even the unborn), and almost all the world's animals, all put to death, except for the few animals and Noah's immediate family abroad the Ark, all on account of this deity's displeasure, rage, and cruelty.


“And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl and of cattle and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: all in whose nostrils was the breath of life, all that was on the dry land, died.

On this day in 1931, a teenage girl made history in a way that no one saw coming. Jackie Mitchell, the 17-year-old pitcher for the Chattanooga Lookouts, took the mound and did the unthinkable: she struck out baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in an exhibition game. This feat, which sounds like something out of a Hollywood movie, is very real and showcases the incredible talent Mitchell possessed.


From a young age, Mitchell's potential was evident. Living next door to future Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Dazzy Vance, she learned to pitch using his special "drop ball" technique. Her skills quickly advanced, and by 17, she was playing for a women's team, attending a baseball school in Atlanta, and catching the eye of the Chattanooga Lookouts. In 1931, she signed one of the first professional baseball contracts given to a woman.


Mitchell's moment of fame came swiftly that season, but her triumph was short-lived. Despite her impressive performance against Ruth and Gehrig, the baseball commissioner soon voided her contract, deeming the sport "too strenuous" for women. Undeterred, Mitchell continued to play professionally with traveling teams until her retirement in 1937.


Jackie Mitchell's story is a testament to breaking barriers and challenging norms. Her legacy reminds us that talent knows no gender, even if the world isn't always ready to accept it.

百鳥朝聖:【台灣戴明圈:2008年東海戴明學者講座】導言與介紹 鍾漢清 (Hanching Chung)

波赫士The Book of Imaginary Being的作品中,有一則故事說鳥王Simurge在中國留了一片羽毛。三十隻鳥決定飛往中國見Simurge。經過長途飛行,這三十隻鳥才發覺牠們都是這隻Simurge,牠們其實就是「一體」的。
【在1998年年底的戴明紀念會上,我講有關以西遊記比喻戴明晚年成道的故事。1999年,我讀J. L.Borges的《想像的動物》(台北:志文出版社,楊耐冬譯pp.164-65)的「知識樹上的不朽鳥西牟[1]Simurgh)」故事,覺得它是一個很好的修成正道比喻。很顯然,Borges對此故事情有獨鍾,他又在《永恆的故事》(1936中的〈阿個莫塔斯〉,花了半頁的注解來說明、闡明:尋找者和被尋者,兩者同一,是一體的兩面。】--
「遠古的鳥王西牟(意思為「三十隻鳥」,牠在中國某地,拋下一根光彩奪目的羽毛。眾鳥兒知道了這件事之後,立即一陣騷動,牠們決定出發去尋找這位鳥王。
 開始的時候,有的鳥兒就喪失了勇氣,開了小差:因為夜鶯向改魂求愛去也;鸚鵡祈求能讓美麗永遠鎖在牠的籠中;鷓鴣(松雞)呢,牠不能在山中沒有個家好寄託;蒼鷺不能離開牠的沼澤;貓頭鷹不能沒有廢墟來棲身。
後來,眾鳥兒還是冒著險出發去了。牠們飛越七谷、七海(最後第二個海洋叫「迷海」,最後的名為「滅海」)。這隊伍中殘生的,受盡折磨卻沒離開的,最後只剩下三十隻。牠們歷經千辛萬苦之後,終於抵達西牟大峰。牠們終於得以見到鳥王。
最後,他們終於明白了,其實他們自己就是西牟;西牟也者,就是他們每個個體,也是他們的全體。」
